Space-A to the Pacific: Routes, Terminals, and Timing
The Pacific theater has some of the most rewarding Space-A routes in the system. From Hawaii to Japan to Korea, military flights cross the Pacific regularly — and the terminals on the other side are gateways to affordable travel across Asia.
Travis AFB (CA): The Pacific Gateway
Travis is the primary launch point for Pacific Space-A. Regular flights to Hickam (Hawaii), Yokota (Japan), Kadena (Okinawa), and Osan (Korea). Travis is a busy terminal with experienced staff who handle Space-A travelers daily.
Pro tip: Tuesday and Wednesday flights are less competitive. Weekend warriors crowd Friday departures.
JBER (AK): The Northern Route
Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska has flights to Yokota and Kadena. If you are flexible enough to position yourself in Anchorage, JBER can be less competitive than Travis for Pacific destinations.
Hickam AFB (HI): Hub of the Pacific
Once in Hawaii, you can connect to Yokota, Kadena, Osan, Andersen (Guam), and occasionally to Paya Lebar (Singapore) or Diego Garcia. Hickam is the Pacific's Ramstein — a hub where many routes converge.
Island Hopping Strategy
- Fly Travis to Hickam. This is the most reliable Pacific leg with multiple flights per week.
- From Hickam, connect to your final destination. Japan-bound flights (Yokota or Kadena) are the most frequent.
- In Japan, sign up at both Yokota and Kadena. They have different flight schedules and often different destinations.
Return Strategy
The Pacific return can be tricky. Westbound flights (returning to the US) from Yokota and Kadena fill up, especially in summer. Sign up for return flights the day you arrive at your destination, and keep a commercial backup option ready.
