Space-Available flights from Joint Base Andrews, the AMC passenger terminal serving the Washington, DC area — East Coast hops and a transatlantic run to Ramstein.
Joint Base Andrews sits in Maryland just southeast of Washington, DC — the closest AMC passenger terminal to the nation's capital. It runs a modest schedule, averaging around 15 Space-A flights a month, and the destination mix leans on a handful of East Coast hubs plus one steady transatlantic run to Ramstein, Germany.
For a Space-A traveler, Andrews is an easy-board terminal. Seats sit wide open — only about 5% of released seats get claimed across all destinations, and the domestic runs to Charleston, Dover, and McGuire are emptier still. Cat VI travelers reach the manifest on roughly 97% of categorized flights. The catch is reach: most of what Andrews flies stays domestic, so it works best as a low-stress hop between East Coast bases, or a first leg toward Ramstein, rather than a one-stop ticket overseas.
The move at Andrews: if you can flex your dates, aim for a Wednesday — about a third of the terminal's flights go out midweek. Sign up early, check the live 72-hour schedule before you commit, and treat a domestic hop as a near-certain board. If Ramstein is the goal, plan for real competition and keep a backup, because that's the one run where seats genuinely fill.

Editorial summary of the live numbers below.
- Andrews runs a modest, uneven schedule — flight volume swings widely from month to month with no dependable weekly rhythm. Plan from the live 72-hour schedule rather than assuming a flight will be waiting on any given day.
- Andrews seats are wide open — most released seats go unclaimed, and the domestic runs are emptier still. If a flight is headed where you want, getting a seat is almost never the problem — finding a flight going your direction is.
- Cat VI travelers do well at Andrews — retirees and other Category VI passengers reach the manifest on nearly every categorized flight, and have boarded on essentially every flight where they competed. Paired with the wide-open seat counts, Andrews is one of the easier terminals for a Cat VI traveler to count on.
- Ramstein, Germany is Andrews' busiest single destination and its main overseas run — and it behaves nothing like the domestic flights. Ramstein runs carry fewer seats and fill far more heavily, so expect real competition for a Ramstein seat, unlike the wide-open runs to Charleston or Dover.
- Wednesday is Andrews' big flying day — a large share of departures go out midweek, more than any other single day by a wide margin, with Thursday a distant second. If your schedule has any give, plan to be at the terminal on a Wednesday for the most flights to choose from.
- April 2026 saw an unusually high spike in flight volume across many AMC terminals — probably driven by real-world operations rather than typical cadence. Weight the other months more heavily when planning your trip.

Plan Your TripQuirks Worth Flagging
- Roll call is conducted at the AMC ticket counter 3 hours before departure. Space-A seats are limited — plan for flexibility and mark present early.
- Active-duty members must be in a leave status to sign up for Space-Available travel.
- Duty passengers on travel orders check in at one of the terminal's three Passenger Service counters, which open 6 hours before departure. They must be in line no later than 2 hours 20 minutes before scheduled departure — arriving later means re-booking through Customer Service.
- This is a card-only terminal — cash is not accepted for meals or the Space-A head tax. Bring a payment card.
- Baggage limits vary by the aircraft flying the mission: C-12 and C-21 — 70 lbs total per passenger; C-9 and C-40 — two bags not to exceed 40 lbs total; C-5, C-17, KC-135, and C-130 — 70 lbs per bag, two bags per passenger; C-37 and C-20 — one bag at 50 lbs plus one carry-on at 20 lbs. Confirm your flight's limit with an AMC passenger representative.
When You Show Up
Parking, lodging, food, and what to do if you don't get on.
Parking
Joint Base Andrews has short-term and long-term parking at the passenger terminal. Short-term parking is authorized for up to 6 days; vehicles left in short-term parking past the 6-day limit are towed at the owner's expense. Long-term parking is for stays of 7 days or more. The terminal assumes no liability for theft or damage to vehicles or belongings left in either lot.
Check-In
Check in at the Joint Base Andrews Passenger Terminal, 1245 Menoher Dr. Bring a valid ID, your leave or travel orders, and a printed copy of your Space-A sign-up email. Roll call for Space-A seats is held at the AMC ticket counter 3 hours before departure.
When to Arrive
The terminal is open 5:30 am to 10 pm daily, and opens 2 hours 20 minutes before a departure or 30 minutes before an arrival scheduled outside those hours. Mark present as early as you can and check the 72-hour schedule for posted roll-call times. Andrews flies most often midweek, so a Wednesday gives you the most departures to choose from. Space-A seats depend on the mission — build flexibility into your plan and keep a backup route.
Common Destinations
Editorial notes to complement the live counts on the flight tables above.
- Andrews' busiest destination and its main overseas run — a transatlantic gateway into Germany with onward Space-A connections across Europe. Expect competition: Ramstein flights fill far heavier than anything else Andrews flies.
- A frequent, wide-open run down the coast — Charleston flights average nearly 50 seats and almost none get claimed. JB Charleston is itself a major AMC hub, so it's a useful connection point if you're chaining flights south or overseas.
- A regular short hop up to Delaware and Andrews' emptiest run — barely any of the roughly 40 seats per flight get claimed. Dover is a major AMC hub with heavy overseas traffic of its own, so it's a strong onward connection.
- A regular run up to central New Jersey — another wide-open one, with about 50 seats per flight and almost no competition. McGuire is a tri-service joint base and an East Coast Patriot Express gateway, useful for connecting onward.
- Andrews' main West Coast connection — an occasional long cross-country leg to Northern California. Travis is the busiest Pacific-gateway terminal, so it's the natural first hop for anyone heading onward to Hawaii or the Far East.
- Atlanta (Hartsfield-Jackson), GAAn occasional run to Atlanta's main civilian airport — an unusual Space-A destination at a major commercial hub, handy if you're connecting onward by commercial air.
- An occasional cross-country run to the Pacific Northwest, near Tacoma, Washington — a long leg, but an easy board when one's on the schedule.

FAQ
Travelers ask these about this terminal specifically.
I know flights are based on mission requirements. Is there anything I can do to increase my chances of making the flight?
Sign up early, and show up early to mark present. If only a few Space-A passengers have marked present shortly before roll call, terminal staff will tell mission planners that cargo can be added to the pallet positions that would have held seats. On certain aircraft, that means fewer Space-A seats than there are travelers waiting. The fix is to mark present as early as you can — don't wait until just before roll call.
Do I really need to bring a copy of my sign-up email?
Yes — always bring a hard copy of your sign-up email, and make sure it shows a date and time stamp. Terminal staff use that stamp to confirm your priority on the manifest at roll call.
Will they let me on the flight if my ID is expired?
No. Check every ID before you travel, and if any will expire during your trip, renew them now. Expired IDs (including your CAC, dependent ID, and passport) will keep you off the flight.
