Gateway to the Pacific

Travis AFB is the busiest Space-A hub on the West Coast and the primary CONUS departure point for Pacific destinations. Airlift missions and Patriot Express rotators flow through here daily, feeding Hawaii (Hickam), Guam (Andersen), Japan (Yokota and Kadena), Korea (Osan), and Alaska (JBER).

The 60th Air Mobility Wing is the largest AMC wing — that volume means more seats, but also more competition, especially around Hawaii in summer and the holidays. The pax terminal is well-run with a modern check-in counter, on-base billeting at Westwind Inn, food at the BX food court and Monarch DFAC, and free short-term parking up to 30 days. Anything longer goes to the separate (paid) Long-Term Storage lot.

If you're trying to get west from CONUS, this is usually your best single bet. Show up flexible — flexible on date, flexible on destination — and Travis will move you.

What the data shows

At a Glance

Editorial summary of the live numbers below.

  • Travis runs a heavy schedule with large seat releases — the largest seat-supply of any West Coast hub — and the great majority of those seats fly empty.
  • It's a Pacific terminal: nearly all departures go to Hawaii, Japan, Alaska, Guam, or Korea. If you're heading west, this is the hub. For Europe, look at Charleston, Dover, or McGuire instead.
  • Mid-week peak: Wednesday and Thursday carry the largest share of Travis flights. Weekend flights are fewer but fill noticeably faster — Saturday and Sunday see materially higher fill than weekdays.
  • Cat VI travelers reach the boarding line on nearly every categorized roll call. Cat VI sign-ups typically sit well below the seats released, so competition is mild on most departures.
  • April 2026 saw an unusually high spike in flight volume across many AMC terminals — probably driven by real-world operations rather than typical cadence. Weight the other months more heavily when planning your trip.

Quirks Worth Flagging

  • Schedule updates are posted by 1200L unless something significant changes mid-day.
  • Pet reservations on the Patriot Express to Hickam are not available — pets travel only on missions that allow them, and slots are first-come. See the AMC Pet Travel guide for what's allowed elsewhere.
  • Headed to Hawaii with a service animal? Hawai'i has its own animal quarantine rules — review them and the service-dog exemption process before booking.
  • Inactive Duty Training (IDT) passengers travel Space-R, not Space-A, on this terminal's missions.
  • If your ID card doesn't show a DoD ID number, the PSA will ask for it at check-in. Pull it from MilConnect ahead of time so you're not stuck looking it up at the counter.
  • Short-term parking up to 30 days, free, first-come/first-served. Past 30 days, vehicles are subject to citation and towing — and can't return for 30 days. No RVs or trailers; use Long-Term Storage instead.
  • 2-hour parking limit directly in front of the Passenger Terminal — use the longer-stay lot for anything past drop-off.
  • Plan to be at the terminal 1–2 hours before roll call.

When You Show Up

Parking, lodging, food, and what to do if you don't get on.

Parking

Free short-term parking up to 30 days, first-come/first-served. Past 30 days vehicles are subject to citation and towing — and can't return for 30 days after. For anything longer, use the separate (paid) Long-Term Storage lot. The 2-hour curb in front of the terminal is for drop-off only. No RVs or trailers in the regular lots.

Check-In

Check in inside the Passenger Terminal at the Space-A counter. Bring ID, orders or sponsor leave form, and dependents' documents. PSAs may ask for your DoD ID number if it's not printed on your card — pull it from MilConnect before you arrive.

When to Arrive

Plan to be at the terminal 1–2 hours before roll call. During off-hours the terminal opens an hour before posted roll call, so showing up much earlier means waiting outside.

If You Don't Get On

If you don't get on, you don't lose your sign-up — your original date/time stays on file for the active window. Westwind Inn is the easiest re-set; Sacramento International (SMF) is ~45 minutes away if you need a commercial fallback.

Common Destinations

Editorial notes to complement the live counts on the flight tables above.

  • Nearly daily — Travis ran 108 Hickam flights over the last 8 months, basically a daily option. Hardest seat to land in summer/holidays; easier mid-week.
  • Multiple times a week. Mix of airlift missions and the Patriot Express rotator. Yokota also feeds Iwakuni, Osan, and Singapore from its own terminal.
  • Multiple flights per week. Kadena onward-feeds Iwakuni and Osan if you're hopping the region.
  • Steady cadence year-round; one of the highest-fill northern routes from Travis.
  • Roughly 2–3 a week. Easier to reach than to leave — plan buffer days if you stop here.
  • Patriot Express and occasional airlift missions. Reliable for Cat VI when it runs.
  • Rare — usually a unit re-positioning. Don't plan a Europe trip out of Travis; route through Charleston/Dover/McGuire instead.

Questions we hear

FAQ

Travelers ask these about this terminal specifically.

I'm flying to Guam. Should I leave from Seattle on the Patriot Express or from Travis?

Travis. Over the last 8 months it ran almost twice as many flights to Guam (26 vs. 15) and they flew much emptier — about 34 open seats per flight versus 13 out of Seattle. Both routes almost always roll down to Cat VI, but more than half of Travis flights had 20+ empty seats, compared to only 13% from SeaTac. Unless you're already in the Pacific Northwest, Travis gives you more shots and a lot less competition.

I want to take a month and travel Space-A out of Travis. What's a good plan?

Travis is the best Space-A starting point in the country — almost everything goes through there. With a month to spend, the easiest play is the classic Pacific loop:

1. Travis to Hickam (Hawaii). Travis ran 108 flights to Hickam in the last 8 months — basically a daily option. This is the warm-up; if you only get this far, you've still had a great trip.

2. Hickam to Guam, Kadena (Okinawa), or Yokota (Tokyo area). All three run multiple times a week, and Guam alone had 49 onward flights.

3. Hop around Asia from there. Yokota feeds Iwakuni, Osan, Singapore, and Diego Garcia. Kadena runs to Iwakuni and Osan. You can spend 2–3 weeks bouncing between bases cheaply.

4. Come home via Yokota to Travis (27 flights), Kadena to Seattle Patriot Express (47 flights), or back through Hickam.

Practical tips: be flexible on dates and direction; buy a cheap commercial backup ticket home for week 4; treat Hickam as the safest pivot point if a leg falls through.

I'm flying commercial to get to Travis. What's the best route in?

Fly into Sacramento International (SMF) and rent a car — there's a Budget office at the terminal. Take I-5 South to I-80 West, then stay on I-80 West to the Travis AFB exit, which feeds straight to the Main Gate. There's a Budget return office just outside the gate. Total time from landing at SMF to clearing the gate is about 2 hours. Call Westwind Inn for an on-base room — it's a half mile from the Passenger Terminal.

Are there regular Space-A flights from Travis to the East Coast?

Not regular, but there's roughly one East Coast flight a week on average. Over the last ~8 months we tracked 35 east-coast departures, broken down roughly: JB Charleston (9), Dover (8), Richmond (6), JB McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst (4), Pease/Portsmouth (3), and Westover/Andrews/Norfolk (1–2 each).

Good news for travelers: these flights fly nearly empty. Average ~43 seats released, only ~3 used, and 91% rolled all the way down to Cat VI. If you can get on the manifest you're almost certainly getting a seat.

Catch: it's not evenly spaced. Most weeks have at least one option, but 2-week dry spells happen. Destinations also cluster in the mid-Atlantic and Northeast.

Why are there so few East Coast to Travis flights compared to a few years ago?

The traffic has thinned, but the seats that do exist are easy to land. For the past 8 months we've seen roughly 1–2 East-Coast-to-Travis flights per week. Most weeks have at least one option, and they're rarely full.

Recent counts (last 8 months):

• McGuire (NJ) — 18 flights, avg 42 seats, 2% fill • Charleston (SC) — 9 flights, avg 45 seats, 4% fill • Dover (DE) — 8 flights, avg 60 seats, 4% fill • Andrews (MD) — 7 flights, avg 42 seats, 7% fill • Norfolk (VA) — 4 flights, avg 23 seats, 27% fill

If a flight matches your schedule, you'll almost always get a seat.

Do I really need to bring a copy of my sign-up email?

Yes — always bring a hard copy of your sign-up email, and make sure it shows a date and time stamp. Terminal staff use that stamp to confirm your priority on the manifest at roll call.

Will they let me on the flight if my ID is expired?

No. Check every ID before you travel, and if any will expire during your trip, renew them now. Expired IDs (including your CAC, dependent ID, and passport) will keep you off the flight.
