Mid-Atlantic Patriot Express to Ramstein, Greenland, and the Gulf
BWI runs about 17 outbound Patriot Express flights a month, with 27 average seats released and a 39% fill — the highest fill rate of any East Coast Patriot Express hub. The terminal is staffed by Det 1 of the 305th Aerial Port Squadron out of JB McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, with counters on the ticketing level of the main BWI terminal across from British Airways. Cat VI reach the manifest on 66% of categorized flights, and when they compete 70% board.
Three corridors split the BWI schedule. Ramstein leads at 48 flights over 8 months (~35% of total). Pituffik Space Base Greenland accounts for 39 flights (~28% of BWI's schedule) — BWI is the only East Coast hub running regular Greenland service (McGuire posted one one-off flight in November 2025, otherwise nothing). Al Udeid and Kuwait split another ~17% on the Gulf side. A separate McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst shuttle accounts for 26 flights (~19%) but releases only ~5 seats each at 0% Space-A fill — these missions typically run full with duty (Space-R) passengers, leaving little room for Space-A.
If you're heading to Europe, expect competition: BWI's Europe-corridor fill is 50%, twice as tight as Dover's 24% on the same corridor. Dover sends about 2× the Europe volume (102 flights vs 48), so when BWI's Ramstein dates don't fit, the 90-minute drive south to Dover is often the better odds. The opposite play is Greenland: Pituffik flights release ~19 seats at ~11% fill — easy to board if your destination matches the mission. Wednesdays carry 42% of BWI's schedule (58 of 137 flights); Friday departures release almost no Space-A seats (5 avg, <1% fill) — those missions tend to fill with duty (Space-R) passengers, so target Tue–Thu when scanning the 72-hour board.

Editorial summary of the live numbers below.
- BWI is the most contested Patriot Express hub on the East Coast — a steady stream of outbound PE flights, but the heaviest competition for seats in the region. Cat VI travelers still compete successfully on the majority of categorized flights.
- Three corridors carry the BWI schedule: Europe (Ramstein), Greenland (Pituffik — a route uniquely BWI's), and the Gulf (Al Udeid and Kuwait). A McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst shuttle adds more flights, but those run heavy with duty (Space-R) traffic and rarely release Space-A seats.
- BWI is the most competitive Europe corridor on the East Coast — Ramstein flights fill far more heavily here than at Dover, Andrews, or Charleston. Dover sends more Europe volume, so when you can flex about 90 minutes south you'll find emptier seats per flight. BWI's edge is convenience for travelers in the DC/Baltimore corridor, with civilian-airport amenities.
- Mid-week is when BWI flies — Wednesday carries the largest share of departures, with Tuesday and Thursday close behind. Friday departures rarely release Space-A seats, since duty (Space-R) traffic fills them. Scan the 72-hour board Tuesday through Thursday.
- April 2026 saw an unusually high spike in flight volume across many AMC terminals — probably driven by real-world operations rather than typical cadence. Weight the other months more heavily when planning your trip.

Plan Your TripQuirks Worth Flagging
- Don't send multiple sign-up requests. If you signed up through the AMC website, don't also email — your record gets bumped to the most recent timestamp, which puts you at the back of the queue. Sign up one way only.
- Mark present no later than 1 hour prior to roll call. Roll calls run at the AMC ticket counter at least 4 hours prior to departure; arrive about 5 hours prior to roll call to allow time for processing.
- Space-A cost: $23.40 per passenger (card only) — the IRS Form 720 international head tax. Lower than European-departure terminals (Ramstein bundles a Customs FIS fee on top) because the FIS fee applies on arrival into U.S. customs, not on departure.
- Claim your luggage at baggage claim when you land at BWI on an AMC inbound. AMC does not transfer baggage to or from other airlines — if you're connecting commercially, you'll need to re-check it with the next carrier.
- Cat V sponsor letters: command-sponsored letters are valid 90 days from issuance; the system holds your record for 60 days or until you travel. Non-command-sponsored letters are good for the timeframe approved on the letter. Re-submit if you haven't traveled in 60 days.
- Baggage: 2 bags per traveler, 70 lb max per bag, 62 linear inches max. Carry-on must fit under the seat and is limited to 45 linear inches. Bulky items (golf clubs, surfboards, garment bags, etc.) — one per person, properly packed. Excess bags run $125 each. Hard ceiling: bags over 80 linear inches or 100 lb will not be accepted — you'll need to repack or buy new luggage on the spot.
- Be travel-ready when marking present: all documents in hand (passport, orders, NATO orders if destined for Germany/Turkey/Greenland, pet paperwork), luggage available, personal vehicles parked, rental cars returned, and hotels checked out.
When You Show Up
Parking, lodging, food, and what to do if you don't get on.
Parking
BWI is a civilian airport — use BWI's public parking lots and garages (Daily, Express, Long-Term) or off-airport options like The Parking Spot. There's no on-base or AMC-specific parking. From the long-term lots, take the airport shuttle to the **International Terminal** (where AMC check-in is located). For current rates and lot status, see the BWI Airport Info Line listed under Transportation below.
Check-In
AMC check-in counters are in BWI's International Terminal, upper level next to door 19 (across from British Airways). Counters open 6 hours prior to departure. Duty passengers must be in line NLT 3 hours 20 minutes prior to scheduled departure — late arrivals get re-booked through Customer Service.
When to Arrive
Get to the counter at least 5 hours before roll call so you can finish processing and be marked present no later than 1 hour before roll call. Be movement-ready when you mark present: all documents on your person (passport, orders, NATO orders for Europe / Turkey / Greenland, pet paperwork), luggage staged, rental returned, hotel checked out. Arriving on an AMC inbound? Claim your luggage at baggage claim — AMC doesn't transfer bags to or from connecting airlines, so a commercial onward flight requires a re-check.

Common Destinations
Editorial notes to complement the live counts on the flight tables above.
- BWI's #1 destination — 48 outbound flights over 8 months (~6/month), averaging 57 seats released and 50% fill. The Ramstein inbound corridor matches at about 5 flights a month (43 over 8 months) but with much larger aircraft on average (113 seats released, 43% fill). A viable round-trip pairing for Europe travel.
- Pituffik Space Base, GreenlandBWI's #2 destination — 39 flights over 8 months (~5/month), averaging 19 seats released and only 11% fill. Uniquely BWI on the Mid-Atlantic coast — no other East Coast gateway runs regular Greenland missions. At 11% fill, seats are typically available if your travel matches Pituffik's mission.
- 12 flights over 8 months (~1.5/month), but only 6 average seats released with 0% Space-A fill in the period. The Doha gateway in CENTCOM but mostly fully-booked duty traffic; Space-A is a long-shot here.
- 12 flights over 8 months across spelling variants (~1.5/month), with ~7 average seats released. Modest Space-A fill (~12%); a niche option for travelers headed into Kuwait or the broader Gulf region.
- 26 flights over 8 months (~3/month), but only 5 average seats released at 0% Space-A fill. These missions tend to fill with duty (Space-R) passengers, leaving little room for Space-A — don't plan a leg here.

FAQ
Travelers ask these about this terminal specifically.
How do I get from BWI long-term parking to the Space-A terminal?
Take a shuttle to the International terminal (Terminal E).
How does the shuttle from the BWI station work?
If you're taking the train to BWI, take the free shuttle from the BWI station to the terminal. The shuttle ride is about 10 minutes and runs roughly every 6 minutes — give yourself a time buffer in case of an accident or delay. Get off at the last bus stop near Terminal E (where the AMC counter is).
I know flights are based on mission requirements. Is there anything I can do to increase my chances of making the flight?
Sign up early, and show up early to mark present. If only a few Space-A passengers have marked present shortly before roll call, terminal staff will tell mission planners that cargo can be added to the pallet positions that would have held seats. On certain aircraft, that means fewer Space-A seats than there are travelers waiting. The fix is to mark present as early as you can — don't wait until just before roll call.
Do I really need to bring a copy of my sign-up email?
Yes — always bring a hard copy of your sign-up email, and make sure it shows a date and time stamp. Terminal staff use that stamp to confirm your priority on the manifest at roll call.
Will they let me on the flight if my ID is expired?
No. Check every ID before you travel, and if any will expire during your trip, renew them now. Expired IDs (including your CAC, dependent ID, and passport) will keep you off the flight.
I lost something at BWI — who do I contact?
BWI Lost & Found is run by Smarte Carte (not AMC). Reach them at 443-960-5424 or BWILostandFound@smartecarte.com, or report through smartecarte.com/bwi-airport/. The AMC counter doesn't track items lost outside the terminal area, so call Smarte Carte first.
